Commercial Vehicles

Accidents involving commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, vans and tractors) often have serious or very serious consequences for the other, generally more vulnerable, party involved. However, the drivers of commercial vehicles and occupants of buses can also suffer serious injuries. It is therefore important that the safety of both these vehicle’s occupants and other road users is taken into account in order to have a positive impact on the accident statistics. Active safety systems (driver assistance systems) are increasingly coming to the fore. However, it is also imperative to continue to examine and discuss the potential of passive safety measures, because there are still unanswered questions here, for example in relation to compatibility.

Front underrun protection systems, which have been required by law for trucks with a gross vehicle weight of over 7.5 tonnes since the end of 2003, can be expected to make a significant contribution in terms of preventing a truck's chassis from being underrun by a car coming toward it.
